Vancouver, Wash. – Residents will have a chance next week to offer their thoughts before Clark County considers changing or setting speed limits on eight sections of county roadway.

The Clark County Council reviewed speed limit recommendations during a work session today. A public hearing has been scheduled for 10 am Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the sixth-floor Hearing Room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.

In some cases, the council will be asked to lower speed limits. In other cases, the council will consider setting speed limits on roads that currently are unposted or have posted speed limits but the county does not have formal resolutions supporting those posted limits.

The maximum speed limit on unposted county roads is 50 mph.

Public Works routinely evaluates speed limits based on comments from residents, requests from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, observations by county traffic engineers and changes in development and road conditions.

State law prohibits driving at a speed faster than what is “reasonable and prudent” given conditions, commonly referred to as the “basic rule,” and sets a maximum 50 mph speed limit on county roads.

The county council next week will consider speed limits on the following road sections:

• Northeast 124th Avenue, from Northeast 99th Street to Northeast 119th Street – The existing speed limit fluctuates between 25 mph and 40 mph. The county proposes to set a consistent 30 mph speed limit.
   
• Northeast 114th Street, from Northeast 124th Avenue to Northeast 132nd Avenue – The existing speed limit is 40 mph. The county proposes to set a 25 mph speed limit.
   
• Northeast 132nd Avenue, from Northeast 114th Street to Northeast 119th Street – The existing speed limit is 40 mph. The county proposes to set a 25 mph speed limit.
   
• Northeast 164th Street, from Northeast 182nd Avenue to Northeast 205th Avenue – The posted speed limit is 40 mph, but there is no resolution to support it. The county proposes to formally set the speed limit at 40 mph.
   
• Northeast 202nd Avenue, from Northeast 164th Street south for 500 feet – The posted speed limit is 40 mph, but there is no resolution to support it. The county proposes to formally set the speed limit at 40 mph.
   
• Northeast 262nd Avenue, from Northeast Bradford Road north for 0.63 miles – The road section currently is unposted, which means it defaults to the state’s basic rule. The county proposes to set a 35 mph speed limit.
   
• Northeast 312th Avenue, from Northeast Ireland Road south to the end of the road – The road section currently is unposted, which means it defaults to the state’s basic rule. The county proposes to set a 25 mph speed limit.
   
• Northeast Borin Road, from Northeast Hughes Road to Northeast 412th Avenue – The road section currently is unposted, which means it defaults to the state’s basic rule. The county proposes to set a 30 mph speed limit.
