Where do my fees go?

Body

When you pick up a building permit or pay for a short plat application, the fees charged pay for many different improvements and services. A small percentage single-family home fees fund staff to review building plans, issue the permit and provide inspections during construction. Traffic, park and school impact fees comprise the rest of the fees charged. Impact fees are collected to ensure that adequate facilities are available to serve new growth.

Fees for commercial development have a similar composition. In the examples below, about 50 percent of the fees paid are used to fund transportation improvements that accommodate growth. Conversely, a majority of the fees paid for an industrial development relate to the building permit and construction inspection.
