Northeast 78th Street

A median is being installed on Northeast 78th Street between Northeast 30th and Northeast 39th avenues. The construction of a median is a requirement of development agreements following the installation of the traffic signal at Northeast 39th Avenue near Luke Jensen Sports Park. The median will also improve safety of the roadway at a location that has been the site of several serious injury and fatal collisions. The project will include a full access intersection at Northeast 34th Avenue, which will allow for left turns onto and out of Northeast 34th Avenue.

In November 2020, Clark County entered into a development agreement with the developers of nearby properties. The agreement included county construction of a traffic signal at the intersection Northeast 78th Street and Northeast 39th Avenue. Construction of the traffic signal triggers a long-standing requirement to install a median on Northeast 78th Street.

This section of Northeast 78th Street has been the location of multiple serious injury and fatal collisions. Construction of the median will improve safety.

To preserve capacity and promote safety, medians are installed on most urban arterials, per Clark County Code 40.350.030. Factors that are considered before installing a median include, but are not limited to, the roadway’s traffic volumes, speeds, sight lines and distances, and crash history. Additionally, the number of connecting driveways and their traffic volumes, the likely adverse impacts on nearby properties, the extent of access control along the roadway, and the number and availability of other access locations are considered.

Public Works incorporates resident input when feasible. County projects are designed by professional engineers. We balance community input with other considerations to create the best possible final design. Considerations include legal requirements, environmental impacts, budget and safety. Input among residents, user groups and stakeholders often differs. While we do our best to incorporate resident input, we are not able incorporate all input or requests. If you have questions or concerns about the final project design, we invite you to learn more on our website or contact the project manager.
